Communicating with Elephants (Afternoon Tour)

Communicating with Elephants (6-person max) Pick up time 14:00-14:30  - Depart Luang Prabang. Tour guides will pick you up from hotels or guesthouses. Arrive at MandaLao: Get an in-depth introduction into elephant behavior and communication.  Food for Elephants: Prepare special treats for the elephants that help in their digestion.  Fun hands-on time preparing tasty food we only feed the elephants in the afternoon. Meet the Elephants: Guests cross the Nam Khan river by longtail boat for the first introduction to our elephants. MandaLao guides introduce guests to our elephants and mahouts, providing background on our elephants. Guests feed the elephants the special treats they prepared for the elephants.  Trek: Guests will take a short 1 Km trek up Hoy Kang stream side by side with these gentle giants. This trek is flat and can be catered to clients’ needs. Say Goodbyes – After a few more treats head back across the Nam Khan river to MandaLao.  Relax – Enjoy the afternoon with snacks on our beautiful deck. Return to Luang Prabang at approximately 17:30.   What Should I Bring? Following elephants through the jungle can be a messy endeavor. We recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. While you will likely be in the water for some part of the tour, there’s no need for a bathing suit. Also, a sun hat can help in the tropical heat – and a camera and a smile don’t hurt, as well!   We provide optional footwear (rubber shoes/knee-high boots) for guests that are designed specifically for muddy and slippery conditions; ponchos and umbrellas are available; and water, sunscreen and bug spray. Lunch is included on most tours.

Into the Wild (Half-Day)

Into the Wild: (6-person max) – Half Day Tour  *Please note this is a strenuous hike and not recommended for children or adults in poor physical shape. Total you will be required to hike 4 Km with 200 meters of vertical gain. Please note tour will not run from April 1st - July 31th beacuse or poor trail conditions.   9:15 - 9:45 Tour guides will pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse. Arrive at MandaLao – Get an in-depth introduction into elephant behavior and communication. Begin Trek -  Follow a small trail into jungle (approximately 45 minutes). Meet the Elephants – Find them hidden amongst the trees in their feeding grounds Continue Trek – Walk alongside the elephants on a ridgeline through the jungle. Snacks- Enjoy traditional Lao treats in the jungle. Huay Nok Stream – After making it down from the ridgeline follow the cool stream back MandaLao restaurant. Bathing – Elephants and Mahouts will interact and continue their on-going bonding in the river, while you watch and enjoy the majestic elephants during bathtime. Lunch – Enjoy traditional Lao cuisine made primarily from our own organic produce. Depart – Leave for Luang Prabang. Drop off at your hotel or guesthouse approximately 2:30pm.   What Should I Bring? New Beginnings (Half-Day)

** Baby Kit is now a 3-year-old bull elephant growing very fast, we have had to make a change to this activity to facilitate his growth, This tour will now run with two elephants, Mae Manh our Matriarch and her recently rescued and reunited daughter Moen. ** Please see full statement here: Baby Kit Announcement   New Beginnings: (4-people max) Pick up time 7:45-8:15 - Depart Luang Prabang. Tour guides will pick up clients from hotels and guesthouses. Arrive at MandaLao:  Guests get an in-depth introduction into elephant behavior and communication with special emphasis on Mahn and Moen, our mother and daughter that we reunited in January 2019.  Meet the Elephants: Guests cross the Nam Khan river by longtail boat for the first introduction to our elephants. MandaLao guides will introduce guests to Mahn and Moen and their mahouts, providing background on our elephants and their inseparable mother-daughter bond. Guests will be provided bananas and/or sugar cane to feed the elephants.  Trek: Pass beautiful Lao gardens before exploring the jungle-covered Huay Nok stream. Guests walk with the elephants through the jungle as they interact with each other and forage on native foods. MandaLao guides continue to explain elephant behavior as they guide guests through the forest. The trek is 2.5 Km and takes about 1.5 hours, it is flat and shaded most of the way.  Say Goodbyes: After some final treats for the elephants, guests leave the elephants and mahouts in the jungle and begin the trek back to MandaLao with their guide. Rosewood Afternoon Cocktail Tour

15:00-16:00- Depart Rosewood. Tour guides will pick up clients from Resort. (Pickup time will depend on time of year) Arrive at MandaLao – Get an in-depth introduction into elephant behavior and communication. Meet the Elephants – Cross the river for an introduction and feeding with the elephants Bathing – Elephants and Mahouts will interact and continue their on-going bonding in the river, while you watch them and enjoy the majestic elephants during bathtime. The group size may be up to 8 people until the half-day tour splits off before lunch. Group size will be 4-people max after lunch. 8:30 Tour: Pick up time 8:30-9:00 – Depart Luang Prabang. Tour guides will pick up clients from hotels and guesthouses. 9:15 Tour: Pick up time 9:15-9:45 – Depart Luang Prabang. Tour guides will pick up clients from hotels and guesthouses. Continue Trekking: Continue trekking from the end of the Therapeutic Trek (HDE). Guests trek a total of 5.5 Km on Inside the Hearts of Elephants (FDE). The remainder of the trek is flat and goes at a slow pace as guests follow the elephants through the jungle while they continue to forage on native foods.  Lunch: A traditional Lao lunch will be served in banana leaves in the jungle near one of our night enclosures.  Tad Kuang Song Waterfall: Guests visit this hidden treasure and have the opportunity to take a cool refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters.  Ban Hua Tad Village: Walk through a Khmu village and see local life. Mahout Demonstration:  Watch and learn as the mahouts demonstrate how they communicate with their elephants. Use what you learn to try the same. Say goodbyes:  After some final treats for the elephants, guests leave the elephants and mahouts at our night enclosure and begin the trek back to MandaLao with their guide. Return to restaurant: Guests enjoy a drink and snack at our restaurant as they reflect on the day’s adventure. 8:30 Tour: Return to Luang Prabang at approximately 16:00 9:15 Tour: Return to Luang Prabang at approximately 16:45  ​​What Should I Bring?
